  1.            IS THIS THE END OF YOUR HEALTH FOOD STORE?

  4. The Ontario Health Professions Legislation Review Committee, set
  5. up by the Ontario government has recently published its
  6. recommendations. Should these recommendations become law many of
  7. the alternative forms of health care we now benefit from may
  8. become a thing of the past and we will see a further entrenchment
  9. of a conventional medical establishment that is largely
  10. preoccupied with furthering drug and surgical intervention.
  11.  
  12. Included on the government's "hit list" are Herbalists, Herb
  13. Growers and sellers, Acupuncturists, Iridologists, and Doctors of
  14. Naturopathy who will become liable to fines of $25,000.00 and
  15. jail terms of six months. Many health care products which are
  16. currently available will also disappear or be doled out by
  17. doctor's prescription only. This list includes vitamins, chinese
  18. and western herbs, homeopathic remedies, bach flower remedies,
  19. tissue salts and aromatic oils to name a few.

  21. Given our present health care crisis it seems laughable that the
  22. government is so hell bent on quashing a group who collectively
  23. are deeply concerned with PREVENTION and sincere care for the
  24. individual.

  26. I would like to point out that these recommendations run contrary
  27. to guidelines set by the World Health Organization which
  28. advocates a system where primary contact with the patient is made
  29. through a practitioner of "traditional" medicine. "Traditional"
  30. medicine being defined by the W.H.O. as "the sum total of all the
  31. knowledge and practises, whether explicable or not, used in
  32. diagnosis, prevention, and elimination of physical, mental or
  33. social imbalance, and relying exclusively on practical experience
  34. and observation handed down from generation to generation,
  35. whether verbally or in writing."

  37. Subsequent to the growing awareness of the vast resources
  38. inherent in traditional health care systems, traditional medicine
  39. has come to be seen as a major aid to achieving the World Health
  40. Organization's goal of health for all by the year 2000 rather
  41. than a hinderance to the use and spread of modern conventional
  42. medicine.

  44. Why then, is the government of Ontario choosing to ignore these
  45. recommendations, when Canada is a member of the World Health
  46. Organization?

  51.      WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT THIS EROSION OF YOUR RIGHTS?

  55. Write to the Premier of Ontario and to the Ontario Minister of
  56. Health NOW. Ask them WHY the Ontario government is supporting
  57. legislation that is so blatantly an erosion of your
  58. constitutional rights. They are obliged to reply to your letter.

  60. Ask them SPECIFICALLY why their government is choosing to ignore
  61. the recommendations of the World Health Organisation.
